I’ve always had long, brown hair. Sure, I cut it short once and donated it, and dyed it black for a few months, but I’ve pretty much spent the past 29 years as a brunette.
So why was becoming a purple haired diva on my bucket list? Why change the status quo? Why do something wild?
Because I was afraid. I was afraid of being anything but a lady with long, brown hair.
And I can’t live in fear. So after getting help from my awesome JOY Life community(y’all voted for purple hair over pink!) I took myself down to see my girl Halli and turn it purple!

First she turned my hair blonde through a rigorous highlighting process, then the fun began.

Once it was completed (the hair, not the champagne) I had my purple locks!

You know, having purple hair is more than just conquering a fear. It’s a commitment to Project 29, and I’ve decided to keep it this way until I’ve checked every item off my list!
Which is a huge commitment, because this stuff is messy and high maintenance. I’ve already had to re-color it, and just look at what my bath tub looks like when I rinse it out🙀

Here’s what I’ve learned so far in this adventure, all thanks to being topped with violet…
We have major preconceived notions of people based on their appearance. I’ve attracted more teenagers, artists, lesbians and free spirits in the past month than I have in my 29 years of life combined. Because apparently, we believe that people with wild hair are youthful, different, outside of the box, and perhaps, gay?
Also, colored hair has major negative connotations for older generations. One aged friend of mine saw it and remarked, “Well, your hormones haven’t settled out completely or you wouldn’t have that purple hair!!(referencing my post baby hormones)”
So, am I comfortable in this look? No. Truthfully I am really uncomfortable. I don’t want the added attention I’m getting. I don’t really want the upkeep and work that comes with this part of the project. But so far, I’ve learned a lot. And the scripture that resonates the most with my dramatic hair change is; ““Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.”
Luke 6:37 NIV
Because I am certainly not who my hair says I am, from what I can tell so far. And if this is true for me, it must be so true for everyone else.
