My Enneagram Experience and How It’s Brought Me Joy in 2020

Most of us have heard of the Myers-Briggs and Enneagram personality assessments. They are tools used by career professionals, psychologists, counselors, educators and more to help us sort ourselves out and give direction in what seems to be an increasingly chaotic world.

While I’d been exposed to the enticing Enneagram years ago, I didn’t take a bite out of its yummy fruit until 2020. This year, it has been one of the most refreshing topics I’ve used to distract myself from the madness in the world around me.

Maybe you read that last sentence and are thinking “What kind of person needs a distraction from madness? One should muscle through and tough it out, never conceding to the changes around you, always staying the course.”

And if you thought that, you probably rank really high on the Enneagram. I rank really low. I’m a 7w6,which, in layman’s terms, is a responsible party animal.

Constantly looking to have fun, I *might* have a tendency to play pranks, tell jokes, and work hard at making the world one iota happier.  I am attracted to adventure, change, surprises, and I love people.

However, there is also this old lady voice inside of me, always checking the louder inner voice with “Eat your vegetables. Drink your water. Pray. Is that person trustworthy? Pay your taxes. Ask advice, seek wisdom.”

Skydiving-a ‘7’ thing to do.
Stockpiling Supplies…the 6 in me!

When I was a little girl my mother used to say, “You’re either going to end up a pastor’s wife or living the life of a hippie somewhere.”

And that’s probably the best description of a 7w6 there ever will be. I’m a free spirit and hate to be told what to do, but I also crave security and good ol’ fashioned structure (in small doses)!

My enneagram type isn’t important in the grand scheme of the world, but having a happy distraction that helps me learn more about how other humans work is. Here at Project JOY Life, it’s my goal to help others find Jesus and the perfect peace that comes from being His.

I believe that knowing who I am helps me understand what God might have created me to do. I’m not wired to be a perfectionist. I’m also not an organizer. Or a planner. Or a diplomat. I’m the type that needs someone diplomatic to keep me from starting a large scale battle because I’m loyal to the bitter end, and wild enough to try things most won’t!

God’s word says He created us and that He knows us. We aren’t accidents; our personalities exist to bring him glory as the masterful Creator. Knowing who we are can help us seek His will for our lives, and joy is in store for those who seek and find!

Take the enneagram quiz. What’s your type? How does God use your skills and abilities to change the world in a joyous way? Let me know in the comments below!
